West Asheville - Word of warning: Don't come to Asheville with a full belly. The temptations lining Haywood Road, the food corridor of 28806, might prove to be too hard to resist.

And the menu continues to swell: In the past year, four eateries have joined the neighborhood.

“It's definitely getting a lot better,” said Stacy Kropp, who helps Viva Delicatessen owners Glenn Goldberg and Peter Callahan, of the West Asheville dining scene.

The traditional delicatessen at 625 Haywood Road opened early this year.

There's some great tradition, she said, laid down by longtime restaurants, such as West End Bakery, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

“They all have their own unique things to bring to the table,” she said.

“We can all support each other because there is enough diversity (with cuisines) and enough people in the neighborhood that can support all of us,” Kropp said. “I think West Asheville could handle even more restaurants as long as it's something new.”

This great cross-section of people and businesses is what attracted Scott Pacheco, co-owner of 444 Gallery and Café, to West Asheville.

“We were looking for three years (for a location),” Pacheco said.

“It just wasn't right in other areas; we just kept coming back to West Asheville. … It's just such a wonderful cross-section of people. It's got art and culture and a whole cross-section of economic backgrounds. It's just got it all.”

Since the gallery and café opened in June, his appreciation for West Asheville has only “improved,” he said.

“There is a really good feeling of community,” he said. “We have a lot of regulars all in the neighborhood. Probably 90 percent of our customers live or work in the neighborhood. You really don't have to go far for anything.”

On Haywood Road, The Hop, an ice cream shop in North Asheville, also filled the space left vacant by Two Spoons Ice Cream with its expansion into West Asheville.
